Geological nature of the Italian
ground
The modern Italian geological
structure comes from the Alpine
orogenesis, due to the collision
between the African and the
European plate.
The rocks
The rocks that formed the
abyssal floor of the ancient
Piedmontese-Ligurian Ocean,
after this collision, overlapped
(each other) and formed the
greatest mountain chain in
Europe:The Alps
The
Appenines
Italy is also
run down by a
minor mountain
chain : the
Appenines.
Iblei Mountains
They are a hilly upland situated between
the provinces of Ragusa, Syracuse and
Catania. Mount Lauro is the highest
peak(985 m).
The name Iblei comes from the Siculan
King Hyblon.
Iblei Mounts are made up of a white
calcareous marly massif made of
limestone.
Calcare bianco
The upland
It was engraved by numerous rivers and
torrents (streams) that formed gorges,
named «cave» in our area.
On the coast we can find a sedimentary rock
called «giuggiulena», the Sicilian word for
«sesame».
Some wide areas in the Iblei have rocks of
volcanic origin. The river Irminio, Dirillo,
Ippari, Tellaro, Anapo take origin from the
Iblei Mounts.

The Turkish land
Turkey has a really complex geological profile. The
lowest height in Turkey is 450.
The flattest areas are in the regions of the rivers
Kizil, Gediz and Buyuk Menderes, in the coast
areas of Antalia ad Adana, and in some inner areas.
The highest peak is Mount Ararat (5166 m).
The Turkish ground
It is formed by the convergence, in the
prehistoric Tertiary period, of three
continental plates: Anatolic, Eurasian and
Arab.
Till nowadays, the Arab plate moves
towards the Eurasian one, this causes
sismic movements.
In Turkey, the earthquakes are
caused by sismic movements.
The area to a high risk of
earthquakes goes from Kocaeli to
Armenia and Georgia.
Turkey is one of the most
sismic areas in the world.
Both Ragusa and Erzincan are
two countries in danger of
earthquakes.
Turkish and Italian students compared the geological
nature of their two countries
