Stability in Bonding
You will be learning:
1. How a compound differs from its
component elements.
2. What a chemical formula
represents.
3. Why chemical bonding occurs.
• Compounds – two or more elements joined
together by a chemical bond
• Chemical bonds create new substance with
new properties
• Chemical formulas tell what elements are in
the compound, as well as the number of each
element
Subscript tells how many there are of each
element
Atomic Stability
• Noble gases have 8 valence electrons, so they
are stable and do not join with other elements
• Atomic stability comes :
– Opposites attract (positively/negatively charge
atoms)
– Shared electrons to make the valence level feel
full
Atoms join by chemically bonding

When an atom is chemically stable,
how many electrons are in its outer
energy level?
