Drawing Bohr-Rutherford Diagrams for
Neutral Atoms



Remember that for neutral atoms the
# protons = # electrons
Look at the atomic number to see how many
electrons the neutral atom has
Look at the period number of the element (the
horizontal row that goes across the periodic
table)


The period number tells us how many
“orbitals” or “shells” the electrons are in.
Now draw these orbitals around the element
symbol.
Remember these values:

4.
1st shell: maximum of 2 electrons
2nd shell: maximum of 8 electrons
3rd shell: maximum of 8 electrons
4th shell: maximum of 18 electrons
