Several hundred young people
involved in around
20 activities for climate protection
in Africa, Asia and Europe
Activities in Asia
Indonesia
Music Movement for Climate in Medan
The youth in North Sumatra have formed a network called
„Rumah Jangga“, composed of different UEM member
churches. They promote awareness to other young people
about climate change. This year they conducted a music
movement and banner competition, with used materials.
Indonesia
Preach about climate change, donation of
Biopore drills and promotion of local wisdom in
Pangururan
Climate change and the efforts of the HKBP
congregation to overcome these effects were
topics of a preach in Pangururan. Two Biopore
drills were donated to the congregation.
The use of Biopore will be promoted throughout
the UEM Asia Region member-churches as a
response to climate change in the region.
Activities in Africa
Cameroon
Children were taught about solar energy in Mbouo
25 pupils from a primary school visited the Mbouo Multipurpose
Training Center to learn about solar energy. They were taught how
solar energy can be used for cooking, drying leaves and fruits and
lighting rooms. Students answered a quiz about solar energy.
There was a prize-award ceremony for the best students a few days
later.
DR Congo
Cleaning, sanitation and greening the area in Cadelu
In Cadelu, young people were sensitized about waste and
climate change. They cleaned the area and planted crop.
Tanzania
Various actions were realized by the Sebastian Kolowa Memorial
University in Lushoto, Tanzania, from 3rd to 4th of December
50 youth from Magamba-SEKOMU made an 8 kilometers educational
walk to inform more than 160 villagers about the Climate Action Day.
More than 600 school children and 8 primary school teachers were
trained on the causes, effects and how to combat the effects of climate
change by SEKOMU volunteers. Three hundred trees were planted in
four school campuses after a climate change training. Furthermore, 50
persons were trained on tree planting techniques and 1000 trees were
planted by them.
Tanzania
Various actions were realized by the Sebastian Kolowa
Memorial University in Lushoto, Tanzania, from 3rd to 4th of
December
50 kg of waste was collected by a cleaning action of
SEKOMU in Lushoto. After that, waste bins were donated to
the Lushoto District Council to sensitize the community and
government leaders about pollution and climate change.
A climate change action dialogue was conducted at
SEKOMU.
Ghana
Activities and workshops at two schools
in Ghana
In Ghana, the E.P Primary School, HoBankoe, participated at the Climate
Action Day with activities such as clean
up exercises in and around the school
premises, recycling activities like using
rice bags as kitchen aprons or sandals,
tree planting and a field trip to the
Ethnographic Volta Regional Museum.
Congo, Tanzania
Further activities were realized by the Baptist community in Uvira, Congo, by the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Tanzania, and by the chist churches in Congo.

Germany
“Christmas – The Different Way” in Bielefeld
Young people of Open Globe Bielefeld organized
a fair Christmas market. In numerous self-madeworkshops using recycled material and natural
ingredients, participants could craft presents,
that give joy. They could exchange know-how as
well as things they didn´t need anymore.
Presentations on coal imports and food sharing
as well as music were also part of the program.
Germany
Smash-up breakfast in Dortmund
Youth of Open Globe Dortmund made a smash-up breakfast,
because more than a half of the produced food in Germany ends
up in the waist containers. During the breakfast, they prepared
an activity with refugees. Making Christmas present boxes from
old posters and thereby saving resources was the purpose of an
upcycling workshop in Dortmund at the 3rd of December.

Information Stands on Climate Justice in the Streets of
Kiel
The Youth Climate Network of the northern church
“Klar zur Wende” had a stand at the Christmas
marked in the center of Kiel. They informed about
climate change and offered actions like painting
sustainable shopping bags and recollecting ideas for
climate friendly Christmas presents. Young people
were impressed by a simulator of the effects of the
Arctic ice melting. Information about a carbon free
future was distributed by a volunteer in an ice bear
costume.

Ideas for ecological Christmas in Göttingen
Young people of the NGO BUNDjugend Göttingen
distributed flyers in the center of the city, with
advices how to celebrate Christmas in a more
ecological way.

Upcycling workshop in Bremen
The Norddeutsche Mission organized an upcycling
workshop during the Climate Action Day. For
example, interested people could learn how to
create something new from and old jeans.

South America
Information month about the effects of aerosol in a
primary school in Mülhausen
An Argentinean volunteer of the youth exchange
program between the Evangelical Church of
Westphalia and La Plata got involved at the Climate
Action Day. He gave background lessons about the
negative effects of aerosols on water, health and the
ozonosphere. Furthermore, the school children
could make experiments about alternatives, like
creating their own natural deodorant.
A representative of the Brazilian NGO CAPA visited
the school and told about sustainability and
ecological small farming in Brazil.
Germany
Swapping and upcycling at the UEM
The young adults' network of UEM participated
actively in the Climate Action Day and swapped
clothes, books and other things, played the keepcoolgame online to learn about climate change
(http://keep-cool-online.de/) and upcycled old books
to turn them into new things.
