Climate Services in Canada
G. Flato
In Canada, we have been providing a range of climate services and
hope to expand on this in the future.
Some examples include:
• Operational climate monitoring, including the Canadian
Climate Reference Network, GHG and aerosol monitoring,
contributions to GAW, GCOS, …
• Analysis and quality control of these data, producing
homogenized data sets suitable for climate analysis
• both the operational data and the homogenized data sets are
available freely from the Environment Canada web site
• Climate Trends and Variability Bulletin -- quarterly report on
the state of the Canadian climate (also available on the web)
• Operational seasonal prediction system (4-model ensemble
two-tier system) with 0- and 1-month lead seasonal forecasts;
disseminated by EC’s weatheroffice web site. A new coupled
prediction system is currently being evaluated.
• Projections of future climate change, based on coupled climate
and, more recently, Earth System models. Results disseminated
widely via CCCma web site.
• Regional downscaling for Canada (statistical and dynamical)
• Climate change scenarios, based on Canadian and other
model results, disseminated via the Canadian Climate Change
Scenarios Network (CCCSN) web site
• Comprehensive climate research program including climate
modelling, process studies, observational research and impact
assessment.
• Services provided directly to clients via MSC regional offices.
