The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is
located in Bayfield Wisconsin on Lake
Superior the largest, cleanest, and coldest
of the great lakes.
When and Why
Apostle Islands
became an national
park
Apostle islands was
officially made a national
park on September 26th
1970. Gaylord Nelson,
United States Senator
sponsored the federal
legislation that first
established the Apostle
Islands National Lakeshore
which President Nixon
Signed.

The Apostle Islands have had a sudden increase of white tailed
deer. They are eating endangered plant species and are running
around freely around the park freely , If they are not stopped many
plant species might become extinct.The biggest issue facing the
Apostle Islands is climate change. As planet temperatures rise
there is less ice cover, major losses of tree species (spruce,
hemlock, birch), and reductions of fish populations (Coastal Brooke
Trout for example).

Apostle islands are best Known for there
beautiful features like historic lighthouses,
sandstone sea caves, ice caves, sand
scapes a few old growth remnant forests,
and natural Animal habitats.

Technology used to
preserve Apostle Islands
•
Technology is used to track invasive species, such as the three
spine stickleback fish. They also use it to see how high water
pollution levels are, and to track the water quality.

Rocks
 Lake Superior Sandstone-this sandstone
is mostly red or brown in color,
sedimentary and usually forms on the
bass of a island
 Athelstane and amberg Granites-These
Granites come from nearby towns in
northeastern Wisconsin just south of the
Michigan boarder.

How Apostle Islands were
formed
• The Apostle Islands were
formed by many rivers that
deposited layers of sand that
over time cemented into
sandstone in the late
Precambrian era. Glaciers
sculpted the sandstone into the
amazing cliffs towering over
lake Superior known as the
Apostle Islands we know today.

How The land is changing
• Lots of erosion has happened at the Apostle islands because
of climate change harsh storms, wild fires and Man Made
things like air or water pollution.
