Climate Change and Global Warming

The Greenhouse Effect: Scientists are sure about the greenhouse effect.
They know that greenhouse gases make the Earth warmer by trapping
energy in the atmosphere.

Climate Change: Climate is the long-term average of a region's weather
events lumped together. For example, it's possible that a winter day in
Buffalo, New York, could be sunny and mild, but the average weather –
the climate – tells us that Buffalo's winters will mainly be cold and include
snow and rain. Climate change represents a change in these long-term
weather patterns. They can become warmer or colder. Annual amounts of
rainfall or snowfall can increase or decrease.

Global Warming: Global warming refers to an average increase in the
Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer
Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a
wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. When scientists
talk about the issue of climate change, their concern is about global
warming caused by human activities.
The Olive Economy
The color of the economy
when people of color and
the green economy meet.
Our Responsibility




The world is in danger due to our treatment of
the environment.
People of color have been the least to contribute
to global warming, but will be the most adversely
affected by its devastating effects
The world must change it behavior about
environmental stewardship.
The Black Church must ensure that all
communities benefit from the economic growth
that will result from responsibly transitioning to a
green economy.
Climate Change

Climate change is something that threatens everyone. All of
us share the same planet and breathe in the same
atmosphere.
Severe weather events are expected to increase in
frequency and intensity as the climate changes – and if you
look at other factors and consequences related to energy
policy, pollution and public health – it becomes clear that
some communities face more immediate threats than
others.

Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike show empirical data of the
dire consequences of severe weather events and how they
tend to fall disproportionately on communities of color and
that there are disparities in other areas, as well
Facts: A Green Divide

Air pollutants associated with climate change are
usually found in greater concentrations where low
income and minority families – and these are
families least likely to have health insurance to
help them deal with the health effects of dirty air.

Global warming will likely cause major disruptions
in the agriculture and tourism industries, both of
which employ a disproportionately high number
of low income Americans and people of color.
Financial burden
Global warming expected to cause a rise
in the costs of basic necessities like food,
water and energy, which make up a much
higher proportion of household budgets
for low-income families.
 On the other side of the equation, some of
the climate change mitigation strategies
that are under consideration would have
their own disproportionate impacts on
low-income and minority Americans.

Saving the Planet

The Black church can save the planet by
providing the “Good News” that going Green is
part of God’s plan.

The WORD created the earth and everything in it.
It will be the WORD that will transforms the
earth…creating a new heaven and a new earth

Our community does not understand the
adversed effects of global warming

Preaching the spoken word (message) of
stewardship will increase faith.
The Upper Room

We need to make sure that the
communities at greatest risk from global
warming are at the table and fully
engaged in the process

The Black church can benefit
tremendously and provide the much
needed training for the creation of:
Green Church Opportunities
Summer jobs for our youth via Green
Collar Job training programs
 Assistance to Senior citizens via
weatherization and solarizing their homes.
Seniors can eliminate their utility bills and
purchase the medicine they need to live
healthy lives.
 Create business opportunities for church
business owners via weatherization
projects

The Black Church: A Green Bridge

The Black church can serve as a Green
Bridge and engage in green awareness
activities, and provide training and other
outreach services that are part of its
mission.

The Green Economy is a platform to
address summer jobs for our youth, senior
citizens, healthcare costs and
opportunities for weatherization for our
businesses and community
We will be Left behind
Global warming expected to cause a rise
in the costs of basic necessities like food,
water and energy, which make up a much
higher proportion of household budgets
for low-income families.

the climate change mitigation strategies

low-income and minority Americans.

New Heaven and a New Earth

The church can be a conduit reaching poor
and underserved communes. The goal
would be to empower our people through
green awareness and provide services that
would impact senior citizens, provide
summer jobs for our youth, create green
collar jobs via training (weatherization,
solar and wind turbine installation, bio
diesel production and other energy
efficiency projects)
Green Church Stimulus Funding


Funding for non profit church initiatives can be
sought as the Obama administration has allotted
over $1 billion dollars for green collar job
training, and over $5 billion for weatherization for
low and moderate income homes. Just as GEDI is
providing green supplier diversity training and
consultancy to corporate and governmental
agencies to ensure that our community benefit
financially, there is a tremendous need for an out
reach component that the Green Church
movement can provide.
New Earth Campaign

New Earth Campaign -the Corporate
partnership with the church's would
position the "Green Church' as a major
conduit along with green minority
business to effectively reach and educate
the poor and underserved communities.
We would lobby Congress and the
administration as well as the corporate
community for funding to take our
communities Green.
Green Jobs

Green jobs earn 10 to 20 percent more
than those in comparable non-green jobs

America’s Clean Energy Sources

Many nations count on coal, oil and natural gas to supply
most of their energy needs, but reliance on fossil fuels
presents a big problem. Fossil fuels are a finite resource.
Eventually, the world will run out of fossil fuels, or it will
become too expensive to retrieve those that remain. Fossil
fuels also causes air, water and soil pollution, and produce
greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Renewable energy resources, such as wind, solar and
hydropower, offer clean alternatives to fossil fuels. They
produce little or no pollution or greenhouse gases, and they
will never run out.
We need Son “Solar” Energy

The sun is our most powerful source of
energy. Sunlight, or solar energy, can be
used for heating, lighting and cooling
homes and other buildings, generating
electricity, water heating, and a variety of
industrial processes. Most forms of
renewable energy come either directly or
indirectly from the sun..
Our Son Power

Most forms of renewable energy come
either directly or indirectly from the sun.

Our ability to reach the masses with the
message of a new heaven and a new
earth, reminding them of the garden of
eden, can save the planet.
Wind Energy

Wind is the movement of air that occurs
when warm air rises and cooler air rushes
in to replace it. The energy of the wind
has been used for centuries to sail ships
and drive windmills that grind grain.
Today, wind energy is captured by wind
turbines and used to generate electricity.
Wind Energy
The Black Church can use its energy, its
WIND, the spirit (the spoken word) to
repower and empower America by actively
engaging in the Olive economy.
Leading by example

We must led the way and clear the path by Going
Green. Recycling, energy efficiency programs,
promoting healthy eating, employing underserved
individuals will not only energize your
congregation, but save them GREEN.
The church not only protects the environment but
provides the following:
1)Elimination of most, if not all utility bills
2)Increase operational budget to meet the needs of
the vulnerable
Making Going “Green” Pay

How you can make a difference?
-Recycling
-Members need to understand that trash is cash
and programs can be created where members
can bring their trash to be recycled.
Install solar panel
- Solar panels will eliminate your members bills and
the church can benefit from additional tithes.
