CLIMATE ADAPTATION CHALLENGES IN INDIA
• India is home to 900M people (1/7 world population).
• Breadbasket of South Asia - Dominated by rice-wheat, rice-rice,
rice cotton systems.
• Key constraints
o Climate induced monsoon variability & disasters - floods,
droughts, storms etc.
o High population density in vulnerable ecologies and coastal
ecosystem
o Variable Water availability
o Soil erosion/nutrient depletion

Cereal System Initiative for South Asia (CSISA)
•
Partners: National Agricultural Research partners (NARS) and CG
centers including IRRI, CIMMYT, ILRI and IFPRI
•
Objectives: Accelerated development and deployment of climate
resilient, sustainable cropping systems for rice, wheat and maize,
improved natural resources management, post harvest technologies;
and building partnerships with private sector for improving input
delivery

USAID Adapt Asia-Pacific Support to India
• USAID Adapt Asia-Pacific is a five year regional climate change
adaptation project
• Project assists India’s National Bank for Agriculture and Rural
Development (NABARD) and the Mysore Municipal Corporation to
access climate financing from the Global Adaptation Fund
• With USAID support, NABARD was able to access funding for three
projects in India– Conservation and management of coastal resources as a potential adaptation
strategy for sea level rise- Andhra Pradesh ($689,000)
– Building adaptive capacities of small inland fishers for climate resilience and livelihood
security- Madhya Pradesh ($1,790,500)
– Enhancing adaptive capacity and increasing resilience of small and marginal farmers
in Bankura and Purulia Districts of West Bengal ($ 2,510,854)
