Federal and Provincial Governments Agree to Carbon

• Prime Minister Trudeau has stated he wants to cut carbon much
more than the preceding government
• In order to implement this, Trudeau has announced a carbon
pricing plan in consultation with Canada’s provinces
• Provinces will have input on carbon pricing plan since energy and
environmental policy tends to be run at provincial level

six months to work out the
details of the climate change
plan
• The climate change proposal
will be introduced in October
2016
• More immediately, Trudeau
will meet with President
Obama this week where this
a strong possibility they will
announce a North American
Climate Deal in order to
better coordinate policy
• A few provinces consider a national carbon tax to be unnecessary
• Some of these provinces have carbon capture plans they say are
sufficient to limit carbon emissions
• Canadian oil companies have been struggling due to falling oil
prices and will resist an additional tax burden
