Some expected Climate Scenarios
What Climate Change Scenarios are expected for
The Gambia
. Atmospheric temperature rise
. Sea level rise to cause loss of territory
(about 92sq km)
. Reduced Precipitation (Predicted for the
Sahel Region)
. Sea surface temperature rise projected at 0.3
degrees per decade from the current mean of
27.8
Definition of Vulnerability
• Vulnerability has been defined by
many but all imply ‘’ the degree
to which a system/entity is
susceptible to injury, damage,
harm or other forms of
perturbation
• What are the vulnerable systems in
the Gambia
•The estuary
•Mangroves
•The freshwater
•Fish (including Shell fish)
species
• Vulnerability of the Estuary
-
Potential shift from euryhalinity to
stenohalinty due to sea level rise
- Potential shift from thermal
homogienity due to increased depth and
resultant reduction in vertical mixing

• Vulnerability of Mangrove
ecosystems to sea level rise and
reduced precipitation and high
atmospheric Temp.
- Over inundation
- Over salination
• Vulnerability of Freshwater
system to sea level rise
- C ontraction
Fin and ShellFish spp vulnerable
-Euryhaline finfish spp
-Mangrove oyster
-Estuarine shrimps
-Freshwater floodplain fish
spawners (eg Heterotis niloticus
ADAPTATION
• The sole sustainable adaptation
measure recommended at policy
level as a contingency is to develop
systems of aquaculture (both Marine
and freshwater aquaculture) to
provide for potential future shortfall
in fish production.
