The Human Body
• How does
exercise effect
the human
body?
• Part 1 - The
Musculoskeletal
System
Muscle
• Muscle is a tissue in our bodies that
converts energy (from food) into motion
• Three kinds of muscle
– Cardiac
– Smooth
– Skeletal
Cardiac Muscle
• Found ONLY in the heart
• Twitches involuntarily (not controlled)
Smooth Muscle
• Found in digestive track, bladder,
female uterus
• contracts involuntarily
Skeletal Muscle
• Attached to bone
• Comes in pairs
(bicep/tricep)
• We can build it by
working out
• Moves voluntarily
(we think about it)
The Skeletal System
• Provides support and
structure
• Surrounds some organs
• Enclosed by muscle and
skin
• Where new blood cells are
produced
Making Connections
• Bone is attached to
muscle by
tendons
• Bones attach to
each other by
ligaments
• Joints - location
where bones make
contact
– Some mobile
(elbow, knee)
– Some fixed (skull)
Next Steps - Diagram
