Brahms 5
Piano Quintet in F minor, movement 3
Learning
Objectives
 To be able to recognise augmented 6th chords
 To study the tonality of the Brahms
 What are these intervals?
Intervals
 Dim 6th
Minor 6th
Major 6th
Aug 6th
 The chord of the augmented 6th has that interval
between the two outer notes
 It is always followed by chord V or Ic
 What do you notice here?
 Construct an augmented 6th chord in G major:
1. Write the dominant note in octaves
2. Go inwards by a semitone each way
3. Add the tonic
Augmented
6th Chords
 Now do it in C minor
 Find that chord in the Brahms on page 232
(Harmony)
 Italian = vanilla
Types of
Augmented
6th
 French = +supertonic ()
 German = +(flat) mediant (Happy Birthday)
 What key is the entire quintet in?
 What key is this movement in? Is this expected?
Tonality 1
 Where is the first obvious modulation? To which
key? Is this an expected modulation?
 Alternation between tonic major and tonic minor
is an important feature of Romantic music
(Schubert particularly loves doing it)
 What is the key at bar 57? (Hint: F#)
 What key is implied in bars 80-85 (look at the
accidentals in the piano part)?
 What key is the trio in (bar 194)?
Tonality 2
 What key is it in bars 206-208? Why is this very
unusual?
 What harmonic device is used in the first 11 bars?
 Find another three examples of this device and
describe them in detail.
 Find a perfect cadence on the first page
Tonality 3
 Haha! You can’t! There isn’t one! Is that expected?
 Brahms avoids perfect cadences – what does this
do to the mood of the piece?
 Describe these chords as fully as you can!
