Retina
 contains
photosensitive elements (called
rods and cones); acts as a screen where
the image is INVERTED (upside down)
Sclera
a
tough white tissue around the outside of
the eye-ball.
This is the "white of the eye".
Aqueous humor
 jelly-like
substance located in the front of
the eye.
Optic nerve
A
bundle of one million fibers that transmit
information from the rod and cone cells of
the retina to the brain.
Cornea
 Refracts
(or bends) the light; clear
structure at the front of the eye.
Pupil
 Tiny
opening in the middle of the eye that
leads to the retina. It is “clear” but
appears to be “black.”
Lens
 Made
up of tissue layers and is used for
focusing the image onto the retina.
Vitreous Humor
 Jelly
like substance located in the midpart of eye
 Has protein to nourish the eye
 Gives the eye its shape
Choroid coat (“choroids”)
 Located
behind the retina
 Absorbs unused radiation
Iris
 The
color part of the eye that can
contract or expand depending on how
much light is entering the eye.
Ciliary Muscles
aka ciliary body
a
ring-shaped muscle attached to the iris
 It contracts and relaxes which changes
the shape of the lens.
Suspensory Ligaments
 Connects
the ciliary muscle to the lens
