Ubiquitous Computing Session
Ubiquitous Computing
In the past, shoes could stink.
In the present, shoes can blink.
In the future, shoes will think.
Ubiquitous Computing
“The Internet revolution has barely
started. It won’t be done until
everything is on the Web. Light
switches, pagers, copiers, printers, as
well as PCs, benefit from Web
connections.” Mark Weiser - Things
That Think group at MIT
Ubiquitous Computing
Ubiquitous computing began as an
exercise and study of how individuals
work, how they use tools, and where the
future of computing might lie.
Its goal is to move computers away from
the central focus of an individual’s
attention and into the invisible world.
Ubiquitous Computing
In this fashion, they will be used
subconsciously, to enhance existing
tools or communications.
Future access may not always be through
a PC
Equipment like telephones or toasters will
connect to the Web.
Ubiquitous Computing
Individuals will not be aware of which
appliances are actually connected.
Tools will connect to the Internet
without the individual’s participation.
Ubiquitous Computing
Appliances that can dial in and download
or schedule repairs
Control panels that know the location of
co-workers
Clothes that know when they need to be
washed

Ubiquitous Computing
Your car might remind you that the oil
needs changing
Your pantry might tell you that you are
out of coffee
Your kitchen may do the shopping, by
sending an order directly to the
supermarket where you shop
Ubiquitous Computing
Your alarm might tell you what type of
day to prepare for by the music it plays

Augmented Reality
AR adds computation to a physical object
or enhances human perception by adding
information not normally conveyed by
the human senses.
