Semicolons
1. Use a semicolon to separate two independent
clauses in a compound sentence when there is no
conjunction between them.

The hurricane came ashore near Lake Charles; its
winds were measured at more than one hundred miles
per hour.

The warnings were broadcast early in the day; thus,
there was no loss of life.
Semicolons
2. Use semicolons to separate a series when one or
more of the elements of the series contain
commas.

He bought a red, a green, and a blue tie; three buttondown shirts; and a pair of penny loafers.

We will stop in Maumee, Ohio; Erie, Pennsylvania;
Albany, New York; and Amherst, Massachusetts.
Colons
Use colons after an independent clause:
1. to introduce a series.

The following vegetables should be planted in March:
radishes, carrots, leeks, turnips, and cabbage.
In this sentence, the clause before the colon is
independent.
In a sentence like:
In March, you should plant radishes, carrots, leeks,
turnips, and cabbage.
There is no independent clause before the series, you must
not use a colon.
Colons
2. to join two independent clauses when the second
amplifies or interprets the first.

A preliminary step is essential to successful whipped
