Beijing Opera
History of Beijing Opera

Over 800 years ago, Chinese people enjoyed
performances where actors spoke or sang
words which rhymed to tell a story.

In some plays, only the main character
sang, whilst the others spoke their lines.

Over the years, Chinese people have
continued to enjoy and perform these kind
of shows. If you visit China, you can go and
see one yourself.
In Chinese Opera, the actors tell a story
through song and dance.
Do we have a similar type of performance in
our country?
The most famous kind of Chinese Opera is
Beijing Opera. It is very traditional. If you
watch a performance you will see and hear
music, vocal performance, gesture, and
dance.
Four types of
roles in Beijing
Opera
Sheng生, a male role
Jing净, refers to painted-face roles
Dan旦, female roles.
Chou丑, the eyes and nose are
surrounded by a white patch (partly
painted face).
