Music is one of the most
enjoyable things ever
created, but could the
music you choose to plug
in affect your moods, or
emotions, or even
behavior?
Music and Your Mood
A study was taken using participants who weren't in an
excellent mood, and only the ones who listened to upbeat
music where able to have a change of mood.
“Dr. Frank Lipman, founder and director of Eleven-Eleven
Wellness Center in New York City and a pioneer in
integrative and functional medicine, recommends musical
time-outs as a way to calm your body and brain with
soothing rhythms and to slow down your heart rate and
help you breathe easier.” (www.healthline.com)
Which I have found to be very true. Usually when I’m in a
crummy mood all I do is basically take a breather . Plug into
my favorite upbeat tunes and by the end of a couple songs
I'm in such better mood than I was before.
Music and Your Behavior
Music and Your Behavior
“Dr. Rich talks about how music can affect the limbic system of the brain,
which is the seat of our emotions. When fully engaged emotions can
be very powerful, and can overwhelm the other brain functions such
as rational thinking of the neocortex.” ( superbrainmusic.com)
Sometimes the emotions and lyrics in the music we listen to could
affect our mood , as discussed earlier, the mood or feelings could
then lead to thoughts, and the thoughts could lead to behavioral
actions. So we ought to be cautious with the way we take our music
in.
Music and Your Memory
Music and Your Memory
It may have happened to us before, we hear a song somewhere
perhaps a party, or a dance and the next time we are in the car
listening to the radio the same song comes on. What happens
after that? Our brain has all ready associated that song with a
particular memory, so when we hear it again we automatically
remember what happened that time we heard that same song.
Music-triggered memories begin in the medial pre-frontal cortex,
a part of the brain which sits just behind our foreheads. It is
responsible for tracking chord and key changes.

Interesting Fact
As mentioned many times music can indeed affect the feelings
we feel. Although, there are two emotions related to the music
we listen to. Perceived emotions and actual felt emotions.
Meaning that sometimes when we listen to music we only
understand what the artist is trying to say, rather than actually
feeling those emotions. Which is why some people find
listening to sad music enjoyable, because they have perceived
emotions when listening to such music.
Things to Remember
Music
it does affect you, in more ways you
might think. It could put you in a happier mood like that song
Happy by Pharrell. It could make you a little sad like
Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey. Then there are those
who remind you of someone you might really miss for me its
Daylight by Maroon 5 and for others it might be Here Without
You by 3 Doors Down. Whatever it maybe music has on effect
on us, whether we know it or not. So it’s important that we
pay attention. Pay attention to what we plug in, pay attention
to the lyrics in songs, and pay attention to the emotions we
feel while listening. It’s up to you what kind of effect the lyrics
will have on you. If you do this then………….
Happy Listening!!!
