SUBJECT AREA/ SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL:
Math / 7th grade – Quadratic Formula round
Page 1 of 1
Major Art Modality Utilized: Music
Standards Addressed in
this Lesson:
7MAS E2009-70:
Find real and complex
solutions of quadratic
equations by factoring,
taking square roots and
applying the quadratic
formula
Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Musical, Logical-mathematical
Lesson Abstract: Students will remember the quadratic formula by singing it to the tune
“Frere Jacques.”
Materials Needed: Recording of “Frere Jacques” if it is not already prior knowledge
M7A1. Students will
represent and evaluate
quantities using algebraic
expression
Procedures
1. Students will learn the song, “Frere Jacques” (also known as “Are You Sleeping?”)
2. They will then take the tune and replace the words with the quadratic formula:
MMSMA.1 - Singing,
alone and with others, a
varied repertoire of music
”Negative b, negative b
plus or minus square root, plus or minus square root
b squared minus 4ac, b squared minus 4ac
over 2a, over 2a.”
MMSMA.8 -Understanding
relationships between
music, the other arts, and
disciplines outside the arts
3. To help students learn the formula, the whole class can sing as a chorus. Another
option would be to place students in groups to make a round (use volunteers as leaders
within the groups).
Area for Teacher Notes:
Assessment: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the formula by being able to write
the equation on math tests and quizzes.
