Meeting the Challenge

Automating health information can
improve our ability to:
•
•
•
•
Monitor and respond to trends & problems in the health of
populations
Expand our knowledge of diseases, treatments and
outcomes
Reduce errors
– eliminate errors of omission via reminders
– eliminate errors of commission via alerts
Manage costs
– eliminate redundant testing and investigation
– eliminate redundant coding, code once, use many times

What is the need?
•
Automated systems requires clinical data that:
– is recorded at the appropriate level of detail
• not forced to be either too general or too specific
– is consistent over time and across boundaries
– can be transmitted without loss of meaning
– can be aggregated at more general levels,
and along multiple different perspectives
– can be interpreted by automated systems

Development with a collaborative focus
•
•
•
Guiding principles developed with a collaborative
focus
– Development of content must include diverse
clinical groups, specialties
Content decisions by consensus
Distributed development environment, across
geographic boundaries

Collaborations with CHI
•
•
Interact with CHI working groups
The Consolidated Health Informatics (CHI)
Initiative recommended and endorsed
SNOMED CT as the terminology of choice
for the domains of anatomy, nursing,
diagnosis and problems, and non-lab
interventions and procedures

Standardized Reporting and Encoding of
Surgical Pathology Report.
– The objectives of this initiative include
the continuing validation of the scope
and granularity of SNOMED for
encoding, retrieving and electronically
communicating information in a surgical
pathology report
