What is mental preparation???








Getting ready for activity/performance
Training the mind
Psychological factors to your performance
Closely linked to pressure
Effects of pressure have +ve and –ve on
performer
“right frame of mind”
Confidence – training / practice
3 stages to preparation:
1. RELAXATION





Consists of mind & body
Physical (somatic)–
reducing muscular
tension built up before
event. Caused by…
Psychological tension =
stress & anxiety
Dealt with by massage /
manipulation
Risk of being TOO relaxed
1. RELAXATION
Mental (cognitive) –
music, meditation,
walk, self talk (key
words)
 How do you relax
before a game to stop
the nerves?

2. MENTAL REHEARSAL
Visualise the skill as it should be done
 Imagery (picture) to help – F1, bobsleigh
 Set plays, routines – mentally fixed (LTM)
 Should be positive to give confidence!
 Part learned skills can be addressed at
each stage on the mind
 CREATE THE PERFECT PERFORMANCE

3. FOCUSING





Rehearse key points to a
technique – understood &
remembered
Free from distractions
Concentrating on task /
event/ game – goal of
event= PB, qualify, etc
Select few points which
should achieve success
Used to block out others
– crowd, noise, personal
life = “get in the zone”
MOTIVATION
What is it? And what forms are there?
 What motivates you?
 How do you motivate yourself?
 Individually specific
 What motivates different types of sports
performers? Chris Eubank, Lance
Armstrong, Dwain Chambers????????

Intrinsic & extrinsic
Can be motivated by combination
 Intrinsic motivation – personal reasons, goals,
fitness, fun, social to prove something to
themselves, etc. Amateurs?!?

Intrinsic & extrinsic
Extrinsic motivation – outside factor, trophy,
prize, money, personal glory/fame.
 Used to generate interest in sport – NGB’s,
coaches, award schemes in schools/clubs =High
Fives rugby, Quick cricket.

IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG
WITH JUST BEING IN THE SPORT
FOR THE MONEY??
