Snow White And
The Seven Deadly Sins
Larry Cline - Hardin Valley Church of Christ – 4/13/2014
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses,
And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
There’s a “Humpty Dumpty”
story in the Bible too.
SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE:
• Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today
and forever (Hebrews 13:8)
• Faith, Hope & Love never change
• Heaven & Hell never change
• Sin never changes
It’s still a matter of the heart, (Matthew 15:19)
• It tempts now just as it did a thousand years ago.
(James 1:12-15)
• It destroys now just as it always has.
(John 10:10)
• It breaks up homes just as it did the home of Hosea.
• It ruins lives as it did the life of the prodigal.
(Luke 15)
The wisest man that ever lived wrote of seven
deadly sins that possess men’s hearts.
16There
are six things which the LORD hates, yes,
seven which are an abomination to Him: 17Haughty
eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent
blood, 18a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that
run rapidly to evil, 19a false witness who utters lies,
and one who spreads strife among brothers.
(Proverbs 6:16-19)
I. We need to see all over again God’s
attitude toward sin. He despises/loathes it.
• Proverbs 15:8-9, 26
• 8The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but
the prayer of the upright pleases him. 9The Lord
detests the way of the wicked, but he loves those
who pursue righteousness.
• 26The Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked,
but gracious words are pure in his sight.
II. No sin is so bad that God can’t forgive
it when it is repented of and covered by
Jesus’ blood.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful
and just and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.
(I John 1:9)
SEVEN DEADLY SINS:
1. “PRIDE OR HAUGHTINESS”
• Proverbs
• 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and
arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth,
I hate.
• 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty
spirit before stumbling.
I Peter 5:5-6
• 5...for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD,
BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.
• 6Therefore humble yourselves under the
mighty hand of God, that He may exalt
you at the proper time.
Why does God hate our pride?
God hates pride because of how it makes us
treat Him and how it makes us treat others.
Jesus was the greatest example
of humility that has ever lived.
Philippians 2:5-8
5Have
this attitude in yourselves which was also in
Christ Jesus, 6who, although He existed in the form
of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to
be grasped, 7but emptied Himself, taking the form
of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness
of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point
of death, even death on a cross.
2. “A LYING TONGUE”
• Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH
EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are
members of one another. (Ephesians 4:25)
• “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable
and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and
idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that
burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second
death.” (Revelations 21:8)
There are two ways we lie • 1. One is by what we say.
• 2. Another is by what we don’t say.
3. “HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD”
• Murder is forbidden throughout scripture.
• This sin kept David from building the temple.
(I Chronicles 28:3)
• Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer;
and you know that no murderer has eternal life
abiding in him. (I John 3:15)
4. “A HEART THAT PLOTS EVIL”
• Sin begins in the heart.
• For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders,
adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
(Matthew 15:19)
• For as he thinks within himself, so he is…
(Proverbs 23:7)
• The heart is more deceitful than all else and is
desperately sick; who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9)
So God teaches us to:
• ... we are taking every thought captive to the
obedience of Christ. (II Corinthians 10:5)
• Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is
honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if
there is any excellence and if anything worthy of
praise, dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:8)
5. “EAGERNESS TO DO WRONG!”
• Some people are very careful to do the right
thing while others are just as eager to do what is
wrong. (Genesis 6:5)
• How are you known?
6. “A FALSE WITNESS WHO SPEAKS LIES”
• “You shall not bear a false report; do not join
your hand with a wicked man to be a malicious
witness.” (Exodus 23:1)
Deuteronomy 19:15-20
15“A
single witness shall not rise up against a man
on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has
committed; on the evidence of two or three
witnesses a matter shall be confirmed. 16If a
malicious witness rises up against a man to
accuse him of wrongdoing, 17then both the men
who have the dispute shall stand before the LORD,
before the priests and the judges who will
be in office in those days. 18The judges shall
investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false
witness and he has accused his brother falsely, 19then
you shall do to him just as he had intended to do to his
brother. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you.
20The rest will hear and be afraid, and will never again
do such an evil thing among you.”
7. “SOWING DISCORD AMONG BRETHREN”
• God wants His people unified.
• I Corinthians 1:10
Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that
there be no divisions among you, but that you
be made complete in the same mind and in the
same judgment.
Romans 16:17
Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on
those who cause dissensions and hindrances
contrary to the teaching which you learned,
and turn away from them.
Our attitude toward sin needs
to be like God’s.
Hate it, do anything to neutralize it.
Sin is deadly,
but Jesus is the one
who can make us whiter than snow!
II Corinthians 5:20b – 21
20bas
though God were making an appeal
through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God. 21He made Him who knew
no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might
become the righteousness of God in Him.
