• The 1920s was one of the most raucous, boisterous decades in U.S.
History. Despite the economic & political strife that marked the early
twenties, by 1923 a new prosperity allowed Americans to enjoy
luxuries unknown during wartime, & to embrace new forms of
entertainment, such as radio, sports, jazz music, movies.
• For much of the decade, American society resembled a boiling kettle,
fairly bursting with the wailing sounds of jazz, wildly dancing feet, the
roar of thousands cheering on sports heroes like Babe Ruth, and
conversations laced with such slang as “banana oil,” “struggle
buggy,” “sheik,” and “sheba.”

• Women, who had obtained the right to vote in 1920, celebrated new
freedoms in the workplace as well as their social life, reflected in part

spawned countless illegal bars & organized crime rackets.
• Sports took prominence in American society as a new brand of
enthusiasts elevated sports heroes to Olympian magnitude.
