 1-13 Powers and Exponents
 Objectives:
 To raise a power, product, or quotient to a power
 To apply the powers laws
1-13 Powers and Exponents
 The volume of a cube, in cubic units,
can be found by multiplying its
length, width, and height, or by using
the formula V=𝒆𝟑 , where e
represents the length of each edge.
The volume of the small cube at the
right is V=𝟑𝟑 cubic inches. If the
length of each cube of the cube is
tripled, what would be the volume of
the new cube, as a power of 3
3in
3in
3in
1-13 Powers and Exponents Cont.’
To find the volume of the new cube,V, find the value of 𝑒 3
V=(3*3)3
=(32 )3 =32 * 32 *32
=32 +2 +2 = 36
Triple the edge of the small cube
Write the repeated Multiplication
Apply the Law of Exponents for Multiplication
So the Volume of the new cube as a power of 3 is 36 𝑐𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠
Since 6=2*3, then =(32 )3 =32(3) = 36
Key Concept
To raise a power to a power, multiply
the exponents (𝑎𝑚 )𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚(𝑛) ,
where 𝑚 and 𝑛 are both
integers
1-13 Powers and Exponents Cont.’
Simplify using a single exponent
(54 )7
(54 )7 = 54(7) = 528
(𝑎−2 )−5
(𝑎−2 )−5 = 𝑎−2(−5) = 𝑎10
(𝑐 0 )−8
(𝑐 0 )−8 = 𝑐 0(−8) = 𝑐 0 = 1
