Solving Equations

Solving One-Step Equations
You use inverse operations, which undo each
other, to get the variable alone. An inverse
operations is like an opposite operation. You

do it!!!
Example: 4n = 52
13(4) = 52
4
4
n = 13
Solving Two-Step Equations
Divide your problem by the equal sign.
Circle your variable.
Get rid pf your number next to the variable by using
addition or subtraction.
Multiply or divide.
Always think of a balance when solving equations!
Example: 5x – 24 = 11
7(5) - 24
+ 24 +24
35 - 24 = 11
5x
= 35
5

x
= 7
Practice With One-Step Equations
1. 5n = 110
2. 7x = 49
3. k = 12

4. 17 + p = 56
5. m – 18 = 7

A ghost was in a house. He went to 13 houses. He
scared a total of 65 people. If each house had the
same number of people, how many people were in
each house?
A young girl went trick-or-treating. She went to about
17 houses. She got 34 pieces of candy altogether. If
each house gave the same amount of candy, how
many pieces were from each house?
A boy was counting up how much candy corn he had.
There was a total of 86 pieces. He got 39 pieces in
one development. How many pieces did he get in the
other development?
Practice With Two-Step Equations
1. 5n + 14 = 44
2. 4y – 7 = 33
3. 17r + 4 = 106
4. 8n + 14 = 54
5. 6p + 22 = 46

You are buying candy and a Halloween decoration.
The Halloween decoration is $28. You buy 5 bags of
candy, and spend a total of $37. How much did each
bag of candy cost?
You are buying a costume for you and your brothers.
Your brothers get the same costume for $16 each.
Your costume costs $22. The total cost is $54. How
many brothers do you have?
A waiter had to work on Halloween for the Halloween
themed restaurant. He earned $67 that night. He
worked 5 hours. He got $37 from tips. What was his
hourly wage?
