• P: parentheses ( )
• E: exponents
Base exponent
• M/D: multiplication and division
from left to right
• A/S: addition and subtraction
from left to right
Example of Left/Right Issue
The first step:
DIVIDE the 6 by 2.
Then you MULTIPLY
the answer by 3.
Letters + Math = Algebra
• A letter used in Math is called a “variable.”
(More on this soon)
• Replace the letter with a given number:
What is x + y if x = 2 and y = 3?
2+3 =5
Replace the letters with numbers,
and solve. if a = 2 and b = 7
