Algebra I 3.0
3.0 Students solve equations and inequalities involving ABSOLUTE VALUES.
#29. What is the absolute value of 100?
|100| = 100
STEP 1.
Get your junk together!
|2x – 3| = 5
“Stuff” inside absolute value sign on
one side of the equal sign.
“Stuff” outside absolute value sign on
the other side of the equal sign.
STEP 2.
-5 = |2x – 3| = 5
-5 = 2x – 3 = 5
Be creative, and drop it!
x = -1
and
x=4
-17 = |3x – 9| = 17
-17 + 9 = 3x – 9 + 9 = 17 + 9
STEP 3.
-2/2 = 2x/2 = 8/2
|3x – 9| = 17
Create the opposite sign on the “third” side -17 = 3x – 9 = 17
of the equation.
Drop the absolute value sign in the middle.
-5 + 3 = 2x – 3 + 3 = 5 + 3
-2 = 2x = 8
|3x – 9| – 11 + 11 = 6 + 11
Get into the solution, dude!
Solve for the variable
(that’s the ‘x’ or ‘y’).
-8 = 3x = 26
-8/3 = 3x/3 = 26/3
x = -8/3
and
x = 26/3
Algebra I 6.0
6.0 Students graph a LINEAR EQUATION and compute the x- and y-intercepts
(e.g., graph 2x + 6y = 4). They are also able to sketch the region defined by linear
inequality (e.g., they sketch the region defined by 2x + 6y < 4).
Standard Equation of a Line:
Ax + By = C
Slope-Intercept Equation of a Line:
y = mx + b
Point-Slope Equation of a Line:
slope y-intercept
y – y1 = m (x – x1)
(where the line
crosses the y-axis)
To find the x-intercept:
find the x-intercept:
y = 0 = mx + b
#35. y = (2/3) x - 4 To Make
y = 0, and
solve for x
#36. x-intercept of y = 3x + 4
#37. Slope of the line segment that
passes through points (1,3) and (5,13)
#38. y-intercept of the line
2x + y = -3
#39. y-intercept of the line
6x + 3y = 9
#40. Graph y = -3x + 4
Algebra I 18.0
18.0 Students determine whether a RELATION defined by a graph, a set of ordered
pairs, or a symbolic expression is a FUNCTION and justify the conclusion.
B = Relations
A = Functions
Relation passes vertical line test.
Relation is a function.
Relation fails vertical line test.
Relation is not a function.
Inverse?? -- What to do? ... What to do?
Just switch the x and y variables!!!
y = 5x – 5 becomes x = 5y – 5
(Make sure you understand
x = 5y – 5 equals y = (1/5)x + 1)
((How she do that??!!))
