4.2c – Solving Equations
Distributing and Combining Like Terms
Definitions of the Day (DODs)
• Distributive Property
• Like terms
Definition: Distributive Property –
For all real numbers a, b, and c
Distributive Property
a  b  c   ab  ac
 b  c  a  ba  ca
a  b  c   ab  ac
 b  c  a  ba  ca
Attention!!! Only distribute multiplication
over addition and subtraction.
Definition: Like Terms –
Terms that have:
1) The same variables…. and
2) The variables have the same
exponents.
Three Simple Steps to
Equation Solving Success
1. Distribute and combine like terms.
2. Decide:
variable on the left (of “=”) or variable on the right
(there is no one right answer…just decide!!)
3. Using inverse operations, move the variable to one
side of the “=” and everything else to the other side.
SOLVE EACH EQUATION
a) 5  4 x  9  2 10 x  8
SOLVE EACH EQUATION
b) 15x  7  x  9  12 3x  12   92
Your Turn!!
1. Solve:
a)
b)
4  x  3  10   x  8
44  2  3x  1  2  3x  1  4 10  3x 
