Order of Operations:
The process used to solve math
sentences.
To help you learn to use the Order of
Operations method, I have brought in a
guest speaker for you…..
My Dear Aunt Sally!
And Don’t
forget Uncle
Cletus!
Now you, young
whippersnappers, I am
here to teach you how to
do some science, or
reading, maybe Math?
Please Excuse My
Dear Aunt Sally….
Now, I am going to teach
you how to solve
number sentences like
this:
(3 + 5) – 2 x 2
But you must follow
my rules….or
Or I will have to give you a
WHACK like I do Cletus!
Please Excuse My Dear
Aunt Sally!
Remember this sentence!
Say it Softly….
Again but louder…
Now in your oldest granny voice!
P..in please stands for parentheses
So always do ( ) first.
E.. In excuse stands for exponents
So do the exponents next.
2
Example: (10 – 4) + 5
What would you do first?
The
M in my stands for Multiplication
And the
D in dear stands for division.
So these will come next, but do them in
the order they appear!
4 x 5 ÷ 10
12÷2 x 3
The
A in Aunt and the S in Sally
Stand for addition and subtraction.
Do these after () and exponents:
Remember though
to do them in the
order they come in
the sentence Or ….
WHACK
I bet these
goofy kids
can’t do it!
Try these: Remember
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
• 1) ( 3 + 4) – 3
• 2)10 + 4 x 5
• 3) 24 ÷ 3 x 2
• 4) (4 + 8) – 5 x 2
• 5) 3 + (18 ÷ 6) - 5
