Women and Heart Disease
One in four women dies from heart
disease, making it the #1 killer of women,
regardless of race or ethnicity.

• The most important sign is feeling
• Women might not have chest pain!!
• Feeling heavy, tight, or burning in the
chest
• Pain in the back, between the shoulders
• Pain or tightness in the chest that spreads
to the jaw, neck, shoulders, ear, or the inside
of the arms
• Pain in the belly, above the belly button
really tired - even if after enough
sleep.
• Trouble breathing or sleeping
• Feeling sick to the stomach
• Feeling scared or nervous
• New or worsening headaches
• Changing your risk factors:
• Stop smoking or using tobacco.
• Get plenty of exercise. At least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
• Maintain a healthy weight. BMI 18.5 - 24.9 and a waist smaller than 35 inches.
• Women at high risk for heart disease should take omega-3 fatty acid supplements
• Eat a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
• Choose lean proteins, such as chicken, fish, beans, and legumes.
• Eat low-fat dairy products, such as 1% milk and low-fat yogurt.
• Avoid sodium (salt) and fats found in fried foods, processed foods, and baked goods.
• Read labels, and stay away from "saturated fat,""partially-hydrogenated," or
"hydrogenated" fats.
