What do I do when I see 4 x 2 ?

I look at the first number.
I see a 4.
This tells me how many groups I need.
I make 4 groups.
I have my four groups.
What do I do next?
• I look at the second number of my problem
(4 x 2).
• I see a 2.
• This tells me how many objects I need in
each group. I will draw 2 objects in each
group.
I now have 4 groups of 2
objects.
What is the next step?
I count the total number of objects.
I have 8 objects. My answer is 8.
The answer is called a product. My
product is 8.
Let’s Review the Steps of
Multiplication
• Look at the first number. Make that many
groups.
• Look at the second number. Draw that many
items in each group.
• Count the total amount of items. Your answer
is your product.
