Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Integers
Number Sense Pretest
 Do not write on the test
 Bring out a sheet a paper. Label your name, period, and
date
 Fold paper in half. Show all your work on left side
 Write letter of multiple choice answer on right side
 Box your answers on the left side of the paper!!!

1. Identify the following using the number line provided.
Positive Integers (PI)
Negative Integers (NI)
A number that is not considered a positive or negative number
2. Indicate if the example represents positive or negative integers (Write PI for positive integers and NI for negative
integers

7NS1.2: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers
(integers, fractions, and terminating decimals) and take positive
rational numbers to whole-number powers.
Objective: Huskies will be able to demonstrate how to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide positive/integers.
Vocabulary Terms
Integer: A _____________________ or, the
_______________________ of a whole number; zero is also an
____________________ and is neither positive nor negative.
Negative Integer: An integer that is _____________ than zero.
Positive Integer: An integer that is ______________ than zero.
Number Line: A straight line with a “__________” point in the
middle, with _______________and _________________ numbers
that are listed on either side of zero. This line goes on
__________________________.
Vocabulary Terms
Product: The result of _________________________.
Dividend: The amount to be ______________________.
Divisor: The amount by which a number is divided.
Quotient: The __________________of division.
**Helpful Hint: Remember the “+” or “-“ in front of a number
is attached to the number and acts as its sign.
Adding Integers with Different Signs
With integers, having more positives than negatives will
yield a positive answer; having more negative numbers than
positive will result in a negative answer.

Adding Integers with the Same Sign
When you add 2 numbers with the same sign, you get more
of what you have.
For example: Adding positives with more positives gives you
more positives. Adding negatives with negatives gives you
more negatives.

Steps for adding numbers with different signs:
Step 1: Find the sign of your final answer by identifying the
sign of the larger number.
Step 2: Subtract the smaller integer from the larger integer, and
apply the sign you found in step 1.

Subtracting Positive Integers
When we subtract a smaller positive integer from a larger
positive integer, our answer is positive. (see above diagram)
large pos. #-small pos #=positive
When we subtract a larger positive integer from a smaller
positive integer, our answer is negative small pos. #-large pos
#=negative

Subtracting Negative Integers
When we subtract a positive number from a negative integer,
our answer is negative
a. -10-1=-11
b. -17-5=-22
When we subtract a negative integer (-3) from a negative
integer (-7), we really add the integer’s opposite (+3). For
example -7-(-3)= -4
When we subtract a negative integer (-3) from a positive
integer (12), we really add the integer’s opposite (+3). For
example
12-(-3) =15

Multiplying Positive and Negative Numbers
The product of a negative and positive number is always a
______________________number.
-1*7=-7
The product of two positive numbers is always a
_________________________ number.
The product of two negative numbers is always a
____________________ number.
-1*-3=3

Numbers (pg.14)* (Section A: #2, 10, 26, 67, 60)
Dividing Positive and Negative Numbers
To divide integers with different signs:
Step1: Ignore signs when you divide
Step2: Look at signs of dividend and divisor to
determine sign of quotient.
Step3: If one is positive and one is negative, the
quotient is negative.
-12÷4=
To divide 2 negative integers:
Step1: Ignore signs when you divide
Step2: Look at signs of dividend and divisor to
determine sign of quotient.
Step3: If both integers are negative, the quotient is
positive.
-90÷-9=
