RATES
 Definition: A rate is a
fixed ratio between
two quantities with
different units
 Rates are often used to
express change over
time
# of boys to girls in the class
# of CDs to the cost of CDs
# of green apples to # of red apples
# of miles driven to amount of time
Unit rates
Unit Rate: Rate for one unit
(has a denominator of 1)
Examples:
Find each UNIT RATE
1.) Pranav got paid $91 for working 14 hours
2.) Ava was thirsty and spent $13.14 for 12 gallons of milk
3.) Ms. Ku can type 592 words in 8 minutes
Remember…
To find the unit rate…
 When the denominator of a rate is 1, we call the rate a unit rate. We usually
use the key word per OR the division sign / to indicate a unit rate.
 Example:
 90 eggs from 15 chickens
90 𝑒𝑔𝑔𝑠
= 6 eggs per chicken
15 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑛𝑠

Ms. Ku is planning a math party and
needs your help!!
With your partner….
1. Calculate the UNIT PRICE of each item on her list. Then help her
determine which store she should go to to find the lowest possible
unit price.
2. Work together to help Ms. Ku stay under budget!
3. Show perfect work and label your solutions correctly!
