Camera Basics
What is an SLR camera?
• SLR means single-lens-reflex
• You can attach a wide range of
lenses — which allows for an
assortment of photos styles as
well as for zooming.
• You see what the lens sees so
you can frame and meter (judge
how much light is present)

Exposure
• Photography is all about light, and how much is let in through the lens.
• The key to taking a good photo is controlling how much light hits the
sensors inside the camera, to avoid overexposure or underexposure.
Exposure
1. Shutter Speed
2. Aperature
3. ISO
Shutter Speed
Shutter speed is about how fast the
lens opens and closes.
1. The higher the number, the
faster the shutter speed – and
the less light there is let in.
2. The numbers are fractions of
seconds (a 1000 shutter speed
is 1/1000th of a second).
Aperature
Aperature is about how
big the lens opening is.
1. The higher the number, the
smaller the opening – and the
less light there is let in.
2. Higher aperatures have bigger
depths of field. Lower aperatures
have very shallow DOF.
ISO
ISO is about how sensitive the
camera sensor is to light.
1. The higher the number, the more
sensitive the sensor is – and the
more you can see in the dark.
2. Higher ISOs are much grainier,
so despite seeing things easier,
the photo is much less clear.
