11 players on the field at a time per team
8 minute quarters in middle school
No kickoffs in middle school
4 plays to gain 10 yds to make a first down (a
new set of downs). On the 4th down teams
often punt the ball to the other team.
Offense
• LOS = Line of Scrimmage
• An offense must have 7 or more players on the LOS
• 5 players will be lineman and wear jersey numbers
50-79 (these are considered ineligible numbers and
can’t go down field for a pass)
• 6 players will be eligible and can go down field for a
pass and wear jersey numbers 1-49 or 80-99
• In our offense that would be (H, L, R, T, A and QB)

Defense
• All defenses need to be gap sound (this means
that we should have a specific player assigned to
each of the 8 gaps)
• Every defense has 3 basic levels
– Defensive Front depth is called “Level One” and they
are run first players
– Linebacker depth is called “Level Two” and they are
run first players
– Defensive Back depth is called “Level Three” and they
are pass first players

It is critical presnap to identify how many receivers are on your
side. A defensive backs will call this out every play presnap.
Note: If the end man on the LOS has an ineligible number we
call him fat to teammates and officials. If he has and eligible
number on he is said to be skinny.
