Proper use of “unit factors” leads to proper
units in your answer. Unit Factor means
the ratio equals 1. Multiplying by 1
changes nothing mathematically.

Unit Factor Practice
1. Convert 34.5 centimeters into inches (2.54cm/1 in).
34.5 cm x 1.00 in/2.54 cm = 13.5826771653 inches
Since original measurement is good to 3 digits, we end
up with 13.6 in.
2. Convert 2376 grams into kilograms.
2376 g x 1 kg/1000g = 2.376 kg
3. Convert 14.02 Liters into gallons (3.785L/1.000 Gal).
14.02 L x 1.000 Gal/3.785 L = 3.704095 Gal
Again reduced to 4 digits so… 3.704 Gal

uncertain. A measurement
always has some degree
of uncertainty in the last
digit reported.

Accuracy refers to the
agreement of a particular
value with the true value.
Precision refers to the degree

measurements of the same
