multiplication.
Distributive Property
You can use the Distributive Property to solve
some multiplication problems mentally.
 Find 4 × 58 using the distributive property.

Properties of Addition and Multiplication
 Commutative Property The order in which numbers
are added or multiplied does not change the sum or
product.
Ex.
4 + 3 = 3 + 4 or 5 × 4 = 4 × 5
 Associative Property The way in which numbers
are grouped when added or multiplied does not
change the sum or product.
Ex. (3 + 4) + 5 = 3 + (4 + 5) or (2 × 3) × 4 = 2 × (3 × 4)
Properties of Addition and Multiplication
 Additive Identity The sum of any number
and 0 is the number.
Ex. 5 + 0 = 5 or a + 0 = a
 Multiplicative Identity The product of any
number and 1 is the number.
Ex.
7 × 1 = 7 or a × 1 = a
