Dividing by a
decimal
Division
 Dividing by a decimal is very similar to normal division but you must
remember to include one extra step.
 Example:
14.4 ÷ 12
We multiply the numbers in the
sum by 10 as this means we will
be dividing by a whole number
and it doesn’t actually alter the
sum as 10 ÷ 10 = 1
12 ) 1 4 . 4
Next we divide using short division.
1.44 ÷ 1.2 =
0 1. 2
12 ) 1 14 . 24
All we have to remember is
that the decimal point goes
directly above where it is in
the question.
Remember…
Multiply by a power of 10 so that you are not dividing
by a decimal
Multiplying both numbers by the same amount in the
sum will not affect the answer
