Average Ability
I am learning to use multiplication to add and subtract series of
whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Below is part of a hundreds board. Imagine putting counters on
pairs of numbers that add to 10.

5 X 11 = 55
Add all the whole numbers together.
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 +10 = 55
Note how this is the same answer we got when we added up all the pairs.
Below is a list of numbers. Consider how they can be grouped
together to work out the total.
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
How many groups are there? 5
What do the numbers in each pair add to? 22
What is 5 X 22 =? 110
So the sum of the numbers must be 110

Now add the 2 left over. 20 + 2 = 22
So the sum of the numbers must be 22
