1-2 Exponents
An exponent tells how many times
a number called the base is used
as a factor
Vocabulary
 Exponential Form: A number that is
written with a base and an exponent
 Base – When a number is raised to a
power, the number that is used as a
factor is the base.

Examples
Exponents
 The exponent of a number says how
many times to use the number in a
multiplication.
 In 8^2 the "2" says to use 8 twice in a
multiplication,
so 8^2 = 8 × 8 = 64
Work some…
 Write the following in exponential form:
4
x4x4=
9 x 9 x 9 x 9 x 9 x 9 x =
 Find the Value:
 2^7
 6^4
Remember
 4^2 is NOT 4 x 2!! It is 4 x 4!!
Replace the letters a, b, and c with the
numbers 3, 4, and 5 to make a true
statement.
2a + 2a = bc

 Sarah opened a savings account, and
deposited $3 on the first day. Then,
each day she deposited triple the
amount of the previous day for five
days. How much did she deposit on
the fifth day?
