5.0 The Coordinate Plane
TSWBAT: plot points on a coordinate
plane and identify the quadrant.
Students graph a linear equation and compute the
x- and y- intercepts (e.g., graph 2x + 6y = 4). They
are also able to sketch the region defined by linear
inequality (e.g., they sketch the region defined by
2x + 6y < 4).
Notes
• The Coordinate Plane
• x-axis = the horizontal axis
• y-axis = the vertical axis
• origin = the center, is at point (0,0)

• Ordered pair
 x, y 
x-coordinate
y-coordinate
• x-coordinate = the number of spots on the x-axis
• if positive, go to the right
• if negative, go to the left
• y-coordinate = the number of spots on the y-axis
• if positive, go up
• if negative, go down
Notes
Plot the ordered pair
Ex.
 4,  2
1) Start at the origin.
2) Move to the right or
left according to the
x-coordinate.
What is the x-coordinate?
3) Move up or down
according to the
y-coordinate.

Notes
• Quadrants
• a coordinate plane is split up by the x-axis
and y-axis into four equal squares
What does
quad mean?
• we label the quadrants I, II, III, IV
y

the numbers are
positive.

Summary
coordinates
To plot a point you need the points ___________.
x
The first coordinate is the __-coordinate
and it tells you
left (if
how many spots to go right (if positive) or ____
coordinate and
negative). The next coordinate is the y-__________
up (if positive) or
it tells you how many spots to go ___
negative
down (if ________).

Complete the Ticket Out the Door without talking!!!!!
Talking = time after the bell!
Put your NAME on the paper.
When finished, turn your paper face DOWN.
