• 1) ALL non-zero numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) are
ALWAYS significant.
• 2) ALL zeroes between non-zero numbers are ALWAYS
significant.
• 3) ALL zeroes which are SIMULTANEOUSLY to the right
of the decimal point AND at the end of the number are
ALWAYS significant.
• 4) ALL zeroes which are to the left of a written decimal
point and are in a number >= 10 are ALWAYS
significant.

Scientific Notation
A method for expressing and working with very large or
very small numbers.
Rules:
1. The coefficient must be greater than or equal to 1
and less than 10. (uses significant figures)
2. The base must be 10.
3. The exponent must show the number of places to
move the decimal point.
Write the number 567,000 in scientific notation.
Exponents
• A positive exponent means move the decimal to the
right when changed to standard notation!
• A negative exponent means move the decimal to
the left when changed to standard notation!
