Write a phrase (words) for the following
expression 3q + 6
 3 times a number q plus 6
 6 more than the product of 3 and a
number q

What is an equation?


Two expressions that are equal to each other
They have variables, numbers, operations, and an EQUAL
sign
Similar to Formulas
Before the variable we were solving for was
isolated (by itself) A = b * h solve for A if b = 2,
h=3
Now we have to perform some operations to get it
by itself: A + 2 = 5 solve for A

Solve for f, if f – 3 = 13 .





Have to get that 3 to the other side. Get f by
itself How do we do that?
Inverse operations!!!
f – 3 + 3 = 13 + 3
f = 16
CHECK IT!!

16 – 3 = 13 so 16 is a solution of the equation
BIG NUMBERS
 "How many seconds are there in a year?”
 "Twelve, January second, February
second, March second, ..."
 ALGEBRA QUIZ
 "What is seven Q plus three Q?"
 "You're Welcome."

The first model of the Boeing 777
airplane holds 375 passengers. This is 85
more than the original 767. How many
passengers can the Boeing 767 hold?
1. Define/state a variable and what it
represents.
*The variable is what the question is asking
about.
p = number of people the 767 can hold

2.
Write the equation
375  p  85
Solve it for p
375 – 85 = p + 85 - 85
290 = p
