Scientific Notation
DRILL – Scientific Method
1.
2.
What are the steps of the Scientific Method?
Explain how you performed each of the steps
during the Bubble Lab yesterday.
Objectives
iWBAT
 Create a Pride Pact for our class
 convert numbers into proper scientific
notation.
 convert numbers out of scientific notation.
 Summarize the data obtained from the
Bubble Lab

Pride Pact
We will create a Pride Pact to use in our
class this year.
 Think of some expectations that you have
to make our classroom run smoothly this
year.

Format for Scientific Notation
Number x 10power
this “lead” number should be
between 1 and 9
What does “powers of ten” mean ?
1
10
100
1000

is
1 x 100
1 x 101
1 x 102
1 x 103
is 10 x 1
is 10 x 10
is 10 x 10 x 10
70 is 7 x 101
700 is 7 x 102
Add a decimal to the number if there is
none.
i.e. 44 becomes 44.
Convert 3505 into Scientific Notation
To convert 3505 into scientific notation you must first add a decimal
to the end .
3505 becomes 3505.
Grab the decimal point and move it to the left 3 decimal places.
(Remember that the goal is to move the decimal point until you have
a lead number between 1 and 9.)
The number then becomes 3.505 and since you moved 3 decimal
places you have 3 powers of 10. Your answer becomes 3.505 x 10 3


(You made the lead number smaller, so the exponent must get
bigger)
(Remember … don’t chop numbers off the end)
Convert 0.0777 into Scientific Notation
Grab the decimal point and move it to the right 2 decimal
places.
(Remember that your goal is to move the decimal point
until you have a lead number between 1 and 9.)
The number then becomes 007.77 (which is really 7.77)
Since you moved 2 decimal places you have 2 powers of
10. Your answer becomes 7.77 x 10 -2

(You made the lead number bigger, so the exponent
must get smaller)
Rule of Thumb

If you make the lead number smaller,
the exponent must get bigger.

If you make the lead number bigger,
the exponent must get smaller.

Multiplying in Scientific Notation
Multiply the lead numbers, add exponents
 Example:

(4 x 102)(5 x 106)=
20 x 10(2+6)=
20 x 108=
2 x 109
Practice
(7 x 102)(2 x 10-3) = 14 x 10-1
proper scientific notation is 1.4 x 100
Dividing in Scientific Notation
Divide the lead numbers, subtract the
exponents.
 Example:

(6.3 x 105)÷(3 x 102)=
(6.3 ÷ 3) x 10(5-2)=
2.1 x 103
