Warm-up:
Concept: PS-2.5
Oxidation Numbers and Ionic
Charge
A FEW IMPORTANT POINTS!
( That means notes)
•Atoms of the elements can lose or gain valence
electrons to achieve a stable electron structure.
•When atoms gain or lose valence electrons they
obtain electric charge because they no longer
have the same number of electrons as protons.
•Atoms that lose valence electrons are left with
a positive charge equal to the number of
electrons lost.
•Atoms that gain valence electrons will pick up
negative charge equal to the number of electrons
gained.
1. Predict the amount of + or - electric charge
that the atoms of each group will have by losing or
gaining valence electrons.
Group 1 atoms: +1 charge
Group 2 atoms: +2 charge
Group 13 atoms: +3 charge
Group 15 atoms: -3 charge
Group 16 atoms: -2 charge
Group 17 atoms: -1 charge
Group 18 atoms: Stable: 0 charge
