Integrate faculty innovation within a formal, sustained,
always improving STEM Program tied closely to the
strategic and long range directions of the College.
• KCC “FIRE UP” I-CUBED
The key outcomes of the FIRE UP project:
1) establishment of a formal STEM enterprise which offers
participants a coherent and integrated program of study;
2) increase in the quantity, quality and diversity of College
STEM faculty who are engaged and prepared to instruct
and mentor an increasingly more diverse student body;
3) the building of the STEM pipeline for students in Hawaii,
resulting in an increase of the numbers of Native
Hawaiian and other STEM degree completers;
4) stimulation of changes in institutional policies and
practices that will support and sustain the STEM program.
• Goal 1: To increase the number of
faculty engaged in STEM from 6 to 26.
Anticipated Outcomes
Outcome 1: A 15 percent increase in the student success rate in
Gateway Math and Chemistry courses.
Outcome 2: A 10 percent increase in the student success rate in 20
STEM transfer courses.
Outcome 3: An increase in weekly STEM faculty-student mentoring
from 60 to 120 hours.
Outcome 4: An increase in faculty-student undergraduate research
from four projects to 12 projects per semester.
Outcome 5: Expanded and deepened faculty support for TCUP and
STEP-UP degree completion goals.
• Goal 2: To establish, improve, and
sustain a formal STEM Program.
Anticipated Outcomes
Outcome 1: Attain UH Board of Regents (BOR) formal approval for an
Associate in Science in Natural Science (ASNS) degree
program (provisionally approved in 2006).
Outcome 2: Strengthened integration of other academic programs
and student support services.
Outcome 3: Integration of STEM program into College and UH
System Strategic Plan, 2008-2015.
Outcome 4: Evaluation of the ASNS degree program within the
annual BOR required Program Review process.
Outcome 5: Based on program review, development of 3-year tactical
plans for improvement, 2009-2012, 2012-2015.
