Mesopotamian Empires

Sumerian Empire




The Sumerians needed a huge amount of
food so they grew barley and wheat along
the Tigris and Euphrates River.
They had a governing system which was
ruled by a king or queen.
In all the Sumerian city-states the rulers
were men.
They created a writing system called
cuneiform.
Akkadian Empire




The ruler of the Akkadians was Sargon the
Great.
Sargon the Great used to serve in the
army of Kish, a city-state in Sumer.
The Sumerians and the Akkadians fought
and the Sumerians won.
After Sargon died his empire stood for
another 200 years.
Babylonian Empire




The kings of Babylon looked for new ways to
govern their empires, so they came up with a
system of taxation.
To help maintain the authorities the government
made a set of laws.
The set of laws became know as the Hammurabi
Code.
Hammurabi based his code of the laws on older
collections of Sumerian and Akkadian laws.
Kassites/Hittites




Once the Babylonian Empire collapsed the
Kassites took over.
They tried for many years to attack
Babylon but they always failed.
The Hittites weakened Babylon after
attacking them for their riches.
Once they were weakened the Kassites
attacked and finally were successful.
Assyrian




The Assyrians were best known for their
skills in warfare.
They learned warfare from their neighbors
to the west, the Hittites.
They learned to make iron weapons and
chariots.
The Assyrians were among the first to use
the lance.
Neo Babylonian Empire




After Babylon was destroyed, the Neo
Babylonian Empire took over as New
Babylon.
The ruler of the Neo Babylonian Empire
was Nebuchadnezzar
The Neo Babylonian also used cuneiform.
The Assyrians had managed to maintain
Babylonian loyalty through the NeoAssyrian period.
