Van de graaff is busted… :
New parts are being ordered for the Van de graaff generators.
So for now…!
1) Discuss function of Van de graaff (how it works!)
2) View clips:

A similar device… http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=SlNGKly09CQ&feature=fvwp

Community demos! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubZuSZYVBng&feature=related
- I have done community demos like this – this fellow reminds me of myself—he is a little
crazy. ;0)

A true experiment…
I have never before done this…so this really is an experiment
for us:
The premise is that all electric fields within a cage will be cancelled out due to the
properties of the conductive material and the rearrangement of the electrically
charged particles…
Let’s try it on two things:
1) Walkie-talkies!
2) Cell phones!
Follow-up Qs: “How does this relate to being in a car in an electrical storm”?
“How does this relate to phone reception in some buildings”?

Notes on Circuits:
Point 1:
Point 2:
Point 3:
Point 4:
Point 5:
Example of a Series Circuit
Example of a Parallel Circuit
Ohm’s Law (showing triangle method, too)
Kirchoff’s Laws (how current & voltage act in circuits)
Finding “Equivalent Resistances” (or RTOTAL)

I have semi-randomly assigned groups and will call out the group names when I am ready for you to begin.
Lab 4: Circuits Simulation
This is a ten-point lab. 6 of the points are based solely on your
group’s ability to follow directions and participate in the following:
Successful Completion of Series Circuit (3 points)
Successful Completion of Parallel Circuit (3 points)
The final 4 points are earned by taking what you have learned by
example and applying it to a slightly more complex system:
Successful Completion of a Series-Parallel Circuit (4 points)
I will come around and have you test your final circuit when you feel
your group’s simulation is ready. I will then award up to 4 points for
your circuit based on how well it performs. [Once your project has
been graded, you are dismissed].
7/9
Grades/Assignments:
Read Sections 11.1, 11.2, 11.4; 13.1.
Lab 4 will have been graded through visual inspection of
results.
8/9
Looking Ahead:
Lesson 08 will be an online lesson on Electromagnetism and
Electromagnetic Waves. The relationship between electricity
and magnetism is a fundamental aspect of nature which
deserves attention.
