16.1 Charge and Electric
Circuits
Positive and Negative Charges
All matter has electrical properties because it is
made of protons and electrons.
Positive and Negative Charges
Different charges attract
Like charges repel
The unit of charge is the coulomb
(abbreviated C).
Static Electricity
Static electricity is caused
by an imbalance in positive
or negative charges on an
object
Static Electricity: How it works!
Electric Current
Electricity: the flow of electric current
Electric current: the flow of electric charge
(movement of electrons)
Electric Circuits
Electric circuit: a complete path through which
electricity travels
Wires in electric circuits are similar to pipes that carry
water.

Circuit Diagrams
Electrical symbols are
used to represent the
components of a
circuit.
Open and Closed Circuits
Current only flows when
there is a complete and
unbroken path, or a
closed circuit – switch is
“on”
If switch is “off”, you
create an open circuit by
breaking the path
Open and Closed Circuits
Current leaves the positive end of the
battery and returns to the negative end.
Open and Closed Circuits
Which devices (A, B, C, D) will be on when…
a. Switch 3 is open, and all other switches are closed.
b. Switch 2 is open, and all other switches are closed.
c. Switch 4 is open, and all other switches are closed.

Resistors
Resistor: an electrical device that uses or
controls the energy carried by an electric current
