The idea
• November 2011 QST
• An Expanded Scale Voltmeter for
120 or 240 V ac – With a Bonus.
• May 2011 QST
• Junk Box line frequency monitor.
Insert pages from QST articles
Order of business
• Pass out parts
• Start with the Volt meter
• Put all voltmeter parts into the
box.
• Modify meter scale.
• Test and calibrate volt meter.
• Proceed to Frequency meter.

Populate voltage meter board.
Add wires to support Frequency board.
Drill partial detent (hole) for switch.
Install switch
Install meter
Wire meter to center lugs of switch.
Push wall transformer wire through box
bottom
• Knot wall transformer wire for strain relief.
• Connect wall transformer to voltage meter
board
Placement of boards.
Add switch to meter.
Watch the polarity!
Add wires to Volt meter
board
Wires from Voltmeter
board to Frequency meter
board
• Strip one end of the wire. Leave
other end covered (un-stripped).
• Positive and Negative DC voltage.
• Solder to DC side of rectifier bridge.
• Single AC voltage sampling wire.
• Use a different color like Yellow.
• Add two wire from board to
meter switch. Track polarity.
Procedure continued.
• Add volt board foam bumper to
box
• Secure voltage board into box.
• Connect meter output wires
from board to switch.
• Temporarily assemble box.
Modify meter scale.
• Lift off meter cover.
• Remove two Philips screws and put
in container.
• Carefully slide away meter scale.
• Spray bare metal side of meter scale
with contact cement.
• Position new scale over meter scale
blank side. Line up screw holes.
• Trim meter scale paper.
• Slide scale back into meter and
replace screws and cover.
Lift off meter cover.
Remove or replace
screws.

Trim meter scale
New paper scale to back
of meter scale plate.
Replace meter cover and
proceed to calibration.
Add more labels.
Build Frequency meter
board.
This can be done at a follow up Tuesday or at your home.
The pulses from the
transistor.
Position parts layout
stickers.
Insure sticker is lined up with Red trace markings.
Proto boards.
Use the three pin 12 volt regulator as your guide.
Start with resistors.
Wire variable resistor as a
rheostat
Rheostat – a two wire device.
Add active components
Work on the lead
placement as you add
parts.
Leads begin to form
traces.
Install frequency
board into box and
wire to voltage board.
Thank You!
