 A gerund is a verbal
form that can be used
in different ways, and
it works as a noun.
A gerund has different uses:
 Subject of a sentence
 Object of a verb
 Object of a preposition
 Complement of a verb
 Negative gerund
 A gerund can be used
as the subject of a
sentence.
Exercise
Make sentences using
gerund as the subject
of a sentence.
Use these verbs:
 Smoke
 Behave
 Study
 Play
 Read
Example:
Sculpt
Sculpting in Africa has
been dated to ancient
times.
 A gerund can be the
object of a verb.
 After some verbs only
a gerund form can be
used.
EXERCISE
Complete the following sentences with gerund or gerund
phrases formed from the cues in parentheses.
We all enjoyed (go to the concert).
We all enjoyed going to the concert

 After any preposition
you have to use a
gerund form except
with the preposition
“to”.

with appropriate prepositions and gerunds.

 Gerunds may be used
